This week marks the celebration of the United States? Independence Day. Imagine for a second if the US had not gone through the pain it endured and broken free from England. We?d still be dependent on that other country, right? Isn?t that analogous to being dependent on someone else for your livelihood? As in depending on someone else?s dream for your paycheck?
For those of you who have had dreams of starting a company, of breaking out on your own, of living a life that is not dependent on a paycheck from someone else, use this holiday as the catalyst for starting. Start your dream of becoming independent by just getting started. You don?t need to know what happens next. You don?t need to know everything. You don?t need to have a grand master plan or a business plan. You don?t need a huge pile of money. You don?t even need to quit your job.
Stop Being a Spectator
Stop watching someone else?s dream on ?So You Think You Can Dance? and start working on your own dream. Quit ?Facebooking? for an evening and spend that time hashing out your ideas on paper. Instead of hitting a pub with your beer drinking buddies, spend the night wireframing your smartphone app concept on Balsamiq Mockups. Don?t watch others from the sidelines. Don?t make excuses. Just start.
Start Your Journey
Start by taking a first baby step. This is by far the hardest step of all. The second step will be easier. And the step after that will be even easier. And pretty soon, you will be on your way.
The funny thing is, you know what that first step is. Deep inside, you know what you need to do. So go out and do it. Go ahead, go start your journey to independence by just starting. It?s not as hard as you are making it out to be. And it’s certainly not as hard as what our country?s forefathers had to endure to find true independence.
